A Greenport High School teacher is accused of stealing money from a wallet in a restaurant.
Investigators say Gordon Haas, of East Marion, stole more than $600 cash from a wallet he found inside the restroom of Founder's Tavern in Southold Saturday. He then allegedly hid the wallet and an iPhone in a toilet.
The restaurant owner told News 12 that after the incident, he told patrons he was going home to get his laptop to check the security video to see who went into the men's room after the victim. While he was gone, the owner says Haas admitted to the victim and others near the bar that he had taken the money.
The Greenport school superintendent says while the district is taking the issue very seriously, it is a personnel matter and no decision has been made yet on possible disciplinary action.
Haas, who is also head of the math department, is due back in court Friday.
Court records show that Haas has also been charged with driving while intoxicated twice.
