A federal grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation has helped the Shinnecock Indian Nation Reservation restore their Southampton shoreline using environmentally sensitive methods.

Shinnecock Tribal Chairman Bryan Polite says the shoreline suffered massive erosion and devastation during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

He says the tribe was awarded $3.75 million, which paid for the replenishing of sand, the placement of boulders along the shore and the planting of seagrass. Polite says these efforts will help protect against another major storm.

"There were different options we were presented with...but being Native American and good stewards of the land, we wanted to do the natural way of keeping the shoreline," Polite told News 12 Long Island.

The beach replenishment project should be completed by the end of the year.
