Gov. David Paterson is leading a charge to eliminate special sanitary districts in Nassau County and cut costs.
Paterson and his supporters want to transfer management of the sanitary districts to the towns. In doing so, they say money will be saved by getting rid of unnecessary salaries and benefits.
Nassau Comptroller Howard Weitzman says reform is long overdue.
"If we can consolidate some special districts, save money and not reduce level of service, we should do that,? says Weitzman.
The idea has been met with resistance from village governments.
?If [residents] have a problem, they call me at home, call village hall, they knock on my door ? try to do that with large government,? says Saddle Rock Mayor Leonard Samansky.
