Gov. Kathy Hochul discussed a proposal to ban the use of cellular phones in classrooms at a conference on Friday.
The remarks came at the Disconnected Conference, which explores the impact of cellphones, social media and technology on children, schools and learning.
Hochul urged those in attendance to support her plan, saying, "Enough is enough. Let's let our kids have a childhood free from this interference, this disruption."
The governor blamed cellular devices for causing distractions in the classroom. She said social media contributes to mental health struggles among children and teens, causing higher rates of anxiety and depression.
No specific details about the plan were given at Friday's event. In May, the governor said she plans to introduce legislation next year as part of the "Get Offline, Get Outside" campaign.
