Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a series of safety initiatives planned for the site of a crash that left five teens dead.
Killed in the crash were 14-year-old Carly Lonnborg, 15-year-old Noah Francis, 17-year-old Tristan Reichle and 18-year-old Jesse Romero. Cody Talanian died in the hospital afterward. Police say the five victims were in a 2001 Nissan heading west on Conklin Street when it veered into the eastbound lanes and crashed into an SUV near Staples Street.
In a letter to Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand, Cuomo detailed the safety measures that will take place on Conklin Street. Cuomo says two speed control trailers have already been installed.
The governor also wants new radar technology in stop lights installed. The first will be at the corner of Conklin and Walnut streets. In addition, Cuomo is calling for a review of lane and median widths and more signals and turn lanes.
DOT officials say the radar signals should be in place within a week.
