Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld and former Assembly Minority Leader John Faso were campaigning hard to win the GOP gubernatorial nomination. Faso earned more than 50 percent of the weighted vote to become the party designee. However, with 40.5 percent of the vote, Weld landed enough support to earn a spot on the ballot as well.
Republicans were hoping to avoid a primary in September, worried that it would divide voters in the race against Democratic candidate Eliot Spitzer.
