Eva Casale can run long distances consecutively for days and is using that gift to make a difference for military veterans and their families.
“My dad served in the Army and most of my connection is meeting Gold Star families and hearing stories about how they lost their loved ones,” said Casale, of Glen Cove.
She is running seven marathons in seven days to raise funds and awareness for veterans' organizations. She is running more than 184 miles across Long Island during what she calls Eva Week — Eva standing for “Every Veteran Appreciated.” The multi-marathon week runs through April 20.
“We’re here at the Commack Fire Department to remember Sgt. Major Christopher Raguso from the 106 National Guard,” she said.
At the end of the week, Casale will have visited over 300 points of honor and will have placed hundreds of flowers, wreaths and flags to remember fallen heroes.
Casale was joined by other long-distance runners. Susan Warsaw is pounding the pavement for her family of veterans and her son who is on active duty in the Army.
“When you’re getting tired you think, oh, my son’s out doing it... so I could do it,” said Warsaw.
“I think about everyone I run for, all those fallen heroes and their families. Hopefully, I pull strength from them every day and that keeps me going,” said Casale.
