A bamboo battle is brewing in Nassau County.

The Glen Cove City Council voted last night to ban the planting of new bamboo. If a resident already has bamboo on their property, they must make sure it is 10-feet from a public street or a neighbor's property line.

Under the new ordinance, homeowners will face a fine between $250 and $1,000 for the first violation. The second violation will cost almost $2,000.

Glen Cove Mayor Ralph Suozzi tells News 12 that the bamboo ban was his idea. He says the fines are not about "raising revenue," but rather having a "community of good neighbors."

The law has to be filed with the state, and should be in effect within a week
