A group of seven young volunteers were honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award in Garden City.
The President's Volunteer Service Award is the most prestigious volunteer award associated with the White House. Eligible recipients must be nominated and meet strict guidelines to receive the honor signed by the president.
“Today we're celebrating youth, and that is such a wonderful thing for us to be able to do…look at these young people doing something to give back,” said Diana O’Neil of the Long Island Volunteer Center.
Syosset High School sophomore Rebecca Wang, who volunteers by playing music for seniors at the Oyster Bay Life Enrichment Center, was among those who received the award at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island.
“Just knowing you're helping someone else live a better life or enjoy their day a little better, that's huge,” she said.
Wheatley School junior Lisa Chang was also honored. She volunteers at a charity that helps disabled children learn to ride horses and visits patients at Winthrop Hospital. She says she looks forward to giving back every day.
“This award is such an honor. I just love meeting all the other volunteers. I just think it’s a great to give back to the community,” she said.
