Nassau Legislator Carrie Solages (D-Elmont) is accused of assaulting his girlfriend at her Valley Stream apartment after accusing her of hiding his marijuana.
Solages was arrested this morning.
According to a statement from Solages' girlfriend, the legislator accused her of hiding his marijuana and became agitated. The statement also identifies Solages' girlfriend as the mother of his son.
Her statement alleges that Solages threatened her with violence and cursed at her daughter. The statement says Solages then grabbed her by her forearm and pushed her neck into a corner by the door after the legislator realized she was recording the incident on her cellphone. According to the statement, the daughter then jumped on Solages' back. The girlfriend knocked on a neighbor's door for help.
"This abuse has been going on for at least two years," her statement says. "Carrie always tells me that he owns the police department and the courts."
Solages, who represents Nassau's 3rd District, was charged with assault in the third degree, domestic abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty in court.
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle say he should resign immediately if the charges are true.
Solages was released on his own recognizance. His defense attorney Brian Griffin urged those rushing to judgment to slow down.
“Any allegation is simply that, an allegation. It is not a conclusion. It is not a finding. It is an allegation. He deserves the same protection as anyone else, which is a presumption of innocence,” says Griffin.
