Police say a stabbing occurred at the Elmont Public Library Wednesday afternoon.
Cops say the incident started as a fight between two teenage girls in the young adult section of the library. They say the fight may have been over a computer.
The argument escalated and the 16-year-old pulled a knife on the 18-year-old outside the library, police say. The 18-year-old was stabbed in the back and the other teen fled the scene. They say it happened just before 4 p.m.
Library Director John Bosco described the altercation as frightening. He says the victim came back inside the library and didn't realize she was stabbed. She began to lose a lot of blood and then slumped to the floor. A nurse happened to be at the library at the time and helped her.
The victim was taken to Winthrop University Hospital and authorities say her injuries are not life-threatening.
Police are looking for the 16-year-old girl and have not recovered a weapon.
