The NYPD and New York State Police Hate Crime Task Forces are searching for the vandals who defaced a George Floyd statue that was unveiled last weekend.
Police were stationed Friday alongside the George Floyd statue at the corner of Flatbush and Nostrand avenues, where the four people seen in surveillance images vandalized the statue.
Vandals sprayed black paint on the face of the statue and stenciled "Patriotfront.us" - the name of a far-right organization - on it.
"Racism is still alive in America… and they stamped it for us to see," says Councilmember Farah Lewis. "It's absolutely disgusting."
The statue has been restored, but this happened on the eve of sentencing day for Derek Chauvin, the officer convicted in Floyd’s death.
"To the group of neo-Nazis who did this, I want to be absolutely clear: get the hell out of our state," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. He adds the New York State Police Hate Crime Task Force will assist the NYPD in figuring out who is responsible.
Another Floyd statue in New Jersey was also vandalized Thursday and had the same group's name spray-painted on it. Police have not connected the two incidents, but it's something they're looking into.
Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800 577-TIPS.
