More than 100 people turned out to a Hewlett church today to mourn the loss of a baby they never knew.

Funeral services were held for the baby who was found dead at a North Lawrence recycling plant several weeks ago. Police are still searching for the baby girl's mother, who apparently disposed of her body.

An autopsy has revealed that the baby, dubbed Denise Hope, was stillborn.

People from all over Long Island turned out to Saint Joseph's Catholic Church to mourn the loss of the girl. Afterward, her body was buried at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Among the attendees was Tim Jaccard, a Nassau County Police Department paramedic who also founded the AMT Children of Hope Foundation.

The foundation was among the driving forces behind safe haven laws that allow mothers to relinquish their newborns to the proper authorities with no questions asked at designated locations. It also counsels expectant mothers about their options.

After the news of Denise Hope made headlines, Jaccard says three expectant mothers contacted his foundation.

"Every child has a purpose, even the short time we had here with Denise," Jaccard says.
