Funeral services were held Wednesday for a Sept. 11 first responder from Selden.
Nassau County police said retired emergency service bureau Officer Paul McCabe died Friday from an illness related to the attack.
A funeral Mass was held for the 72-year-old at the St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Selden.
"Police Officer McCabe was one of the finest," said Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter. "He had the respect of the members that he's worked with, he spent a lot of time working on 9/11 on the actual pile and during retrieval and recovery."
McCabe is being laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery.
