A walking fundraiser was held at Eisenhower Park on Sunday to benefit the
Children's Brain Tumor Foundation.
News 12’s Antionette Biordi hosted the event and walked with families and
supporters.
The organization had to cancel last year's walk because of the pandemic, but
they were back and better than ever this weekend.
The event took place during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Many of the families who took part have children who are living with brain
tumors. They say being at the event helps other families know that they're not
alone in these fights.
Cristhian
Jimenez, of Copiague, is only 6 years old, but already he is a survivor— he was
diagnosed with a brain tumor. Doctors removed 80% of it in a 9-hour surgery when he was just a year and a half.
The Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation aims
to help families find support during these difficult diagnoses.
“It's a diagnosis that lasts
a lifetime, the cognitive changes emotional changes - without this support,
families can really feel lost and alone,” says Stacia Wagner, the president
of the foundation.
Organizers say they hoped to raise $50,000 from Sunday’s walk, and the money will go to
funding programs and research to find a cure.
