Freeport PD secures $100K for body cameras
The Freeport Police Department and the Nassau District Attorney's Office announced Thursday that more than $100,000 has been secured to equip all 60 Freeport Patrol and Traffic Unit officers with body cameras.
As News 12 has reported, only a handful of Freeport officers had been wearing body cameras since last summer.
Funds will also be used to buy dashcams for all of Freeport's marked police cars. The cameras are activated whenever the police lights are turned on.
A Nassau County Police Department spokesperson told News 12 they are, "finalizing details for the pilot program" to provide body cameras for officers. Police Benevolent Association President James Carver says there are many issues to consider before a program is put in place.
"What happens if you shut it off? Does it look like a conspiracy or cover-up? Or privacy issues when you go into someone's home, they might not want to be filmed," said Carver.
Suffolk police told News 12 that while they don't have any definite plans on using body cameras at this time, they will be looking at how other departments handle it first.
