A Franklin Square family is fighting the clock to try and find a cure for their son's rare intestinal disease.

Tom Onorato says his 3-year-old son, Thomas, has microvillus inclusion disease, which has plagued him since birth. He says Thomas is in intestinal failure, and there is no cure.

Onorato says his son's body is unable to absorb nutrition and maintain hydration, so he needs to be hydrated and given nutrition intravenously for 14 hours on a daily basis.

He and his wife, Melissa, created the TKO Strong Foundation to raise funds for research and awareness of the disease. It recently donated $75,000 in grant money to a scientist in the Netherlands who is working on finding a cure.

"We decided to give this disease a new meaning, not just a death sentence," says Tom Onorato. 

The foundation is scheduled to hold a fall fundraiser in October at the Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, with money going toward research for a cure.

"It restores your faith in humanity that people are so willing to give and to help," says Mellissa Onorato.
