Restaurant owners on Manhasset Bay say a stomach-churning odor is driving away customers.
Manhasset Bay Marina owner Guy LaMotta says since the rains last weekend, there has been a foul stench every low tide. LaMotta thinks sewage or run-off from the storms flowed into the bay. Other waterside restaurant owners also say the smell is affecting business.
Some fisherman worry that whatever is causing the odor is toxic. One fisherman says all the blue crabs he caught died after the stench came. The Department of Environmental Conservation says it hasn?t received any complaints about a foul smell or any reports of problems at sewage treatment plants it monitors in Nassau and Suffolk.
