A retired Navy senior chief is traveling the country to interview the families of fallen service members.
Keith Sherman is stopping in all 50 states to speak to Gold Star families, like the Fuentes family in Levittown.
Nancy Fuentes' son, Army Spc. Daniel Fuentes, was killed in Iraq in 2007. The Island Trees High School graduate was 19 years old.
Fuentes says that the project will help keep her son's memory alive, which is what Sherman wants people to remember.
"I want people to know that the freedoms that we have--they're not free," Sherman says. "People do pay a sacrifice for them and for all these Gold Star families that I interact with and document their stories every day for them is Memorial Day."
The Levittown mother says Danny had always wanted to be a soldier and there was not changing his mind.
Sherman hopes to have all of his interviews finished before the end of September. He then wants to climb Gold Star Peak in Alaska and read out loud the names of all the veterans who are part of the project.
The interview will be archived at the Library of Congress, which will preserve Danny's story for years to come.
