A former Suffolk aviation site may get new life after a vote to rezone the site.
Lawmakers voted Tuesday to change the zoning of the former Lawrence aviation industrial site into a residential and light-use commercial property.
Seven years ago, the 126-acre property was determined to contain toxic waste and became a federal Superfund site. A moratorium was then issued, preventing the building of any sort of residential units. That moratorium expires next month.
Many residents aren't happy about the decision to rezone the site. In fact, Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine abstained from the vote.
