Former Islip Town Supervisor Pete McGowan began serving his 90-day prison sentence Friday.
Once one of Suffolk County?s most powerful Republicans, McGowan was convicted of using campaign funds for personal expenses. Officials say McGowan will serve his time at a dormitory with about 30 other prisoners in Yaphank, where he will serve on a work crew doing painting, landscaping and general cleanup.
Defense attorney Raymond Perini says McGowan is ready to do his time, put everything behind him and get on with his life. McGowan will be eligible for parole after 60 days.
