Former Islip Town Supervisor Pete McGowan is getting support from an unlikely ally as he awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to misuse of campaign funds.

Suffolk Democratic Party Chairman Richard Schaffer is lobbying against jail time for McGowan, a Republican. McGowan is expected to receive one to three years in prison for using campaign contributions for personal expenses. McGowan resigned from his position before pleading guilty to four criminal charges Thursday.

Suffolk District Attorney Tom Spota would not comment if McGowan?s arrest was the culmination of the investigation into Islip Town Hall or if more arrests were to come. Spota says this incident should be a wake-up call to all politicians about how they spend their campaign funds.
