Forecasters are predicting that Long Island is due for a major hurricane within the next five years.
Some experts report that conditions for the upcoming hurricane season are setting up very similarly to those in 1938, the year in which Long Island was hit with its worst hurricane. Experts say that global atmospheric changes have made Long Island two and a half times more likely to see a hurricane than just 12 years ago.
Michael Wyllie, of the National Weather Service, says specific predictions may be out of line. He says satellite technology was not being used until the 1960s and that some forecasters are hyping the situation too much.
