Chunks of hot iron debris from Long Island Rail Road tracks has been found in Floral Park.
One piece of iron landed on a playing field at the Floral Park-Bellrose Elementary School. The school's landscaper, who said he saw it land, said the iron was too hot to handle when he tried to pick it up. The superintendent said that field is often filled with children.
Floral Park resident Roxanne Mahler-Sullivan, whose home is adjacent to a portion of the tracks, said a piece of iron flew into her backyard. She said she's now afraid to allow her kids to play there.
LIRR said the metal does belong to it, but doesn't know how the debris got there. However, LIRR does not believe a passing train propelled the debris.
LIRR said it has doubled inspections near the school and picked up patrols in other areas. Nonetheless, News 12 Long Island discovered several railroad spikes and other metals during a brief walk.
Mahler-Sullivan wants officials to take strong action now, before anyone is injured.
"My children are in my backyard every afternoon playing and it would devistate me if anything ever happened to one of them because of something that came flying from the train," she said.
