America's first vaccinated nurse from Long Island Jewish Medical Center received her second Pfizer dose Monday, 21 days after that historic first shot.
Just days into the new year, registered nurse Sandra Lindsay is now fully immunized against COVID-19. The critical care manager completed the two-dose plan, as is required for Pfizer's vaccine.
"It feels like I've completed the cycle and closed the loop, so to speak, by receiving the second dose," says Lindsay. "And I remain hopeful that this is what we need to bend the curve and keep it down in this global crisis."
The vaccine rollout in New York has been criticized by some questioning why some people are getting their second doses while others are still waiting to get their first. Northwell Health CEO Michael Dowling says the hospital system is giving out everything it gets.
"So it's not like I get doses today and I have to keep doses back for the second one," says Dowling. "It's all timed so we know we will get a second allocation for the second doses as we move forward."
Northwell Health says it's vaccinated more than 26,000 employees in the past three weeks.
PM Pediatrics in Manhasset received 100 doses of the Moderna vaccine late last week and began vaccinating its employees Monday.
"We see patients here every day who have COVID or are being tested for COVID, so I feel my exposure rate, as well as that of my colleagues, is high," says registered nurse Patricia Czyz. "So I feel responsible to protect myself and my co-workers and my family."
All 100 doses will be used to vaccinate employees with their first dose. The vice president of clinical operations says state health officials told them a second shipment would arrive in time to give everyone their second dose.
