Firefighters and loved ones gathered Tuesday to remember firemen who died two years ago fighting a Bronx blaze in what is now called Black Sunday.
Mourners attended a memorial service for Lieutenant Curtis Meyran and fireman John Bellew at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church. Meyran and Bellew jumped to their deaths after becoming trapped in a fire at an apartment building on January 23, 2005. Four other firefighters were injured.
A FDNY report blames human error on the part of firefighters inside and outside the structure. The report also cites the fact that rope, which Meyran and Bellew could have used to repel from a window, was not standard issue then. Prosecutors have charged the building's landlord and two tenants with manslaughter in the case. Officials say illegal partitions that were used to create more rooms ultimately trapped Bellew and Meyran.
