An stranger knocking on the door may have saved a family in Lynbrook Sunday.
A member of the Hewlett Fire Department saw smoke coming from a home on Scranton Avenue as he was driving through the area around 5 p.m.
"We were in our living room eating lunch and a guy came banging on the door saying 'There's a fire on your roof, you've got to get everyone out,'" says Dylan Strife.
Soon after the family was evacuated and fire crews arrived, Lynbrook Fire Chief Jim McDermott says the roof of the home began to collapse.
The family living in the home says the house has been in their family since the 1930s and that they plan to rebuild.
McDermott says it is too early to determine a cause of the fire.
