An Islip family lost their home, their dog and their belongings after a fire ripped through their Bertram Street house.
Fire officials say a cleaning woman inside alerted the homeowners and two of their four children who were home at the time that the fire erupted on the upper floor.
Over 65 firefighters from 10 fire companies were called to the scene around 11:15 a.m. to help extinguish the fire.
Islip fire officials say all of the of the human occupants got out safely but that one of the family's three dogs died in the fire.
Neighbors say the block is close and they will make sure the family, who has four children under the age of 7, will have a good Christmas in spite of the fire.
"We're going to make sure it's alright because we love him as a neighbor and we want them to stay here," said Jim Hornick.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries in the fire.
The American Red Cross is helping the family with temporary housing.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials say it's not believed to be suspicious.
