Two fires in a span of 10 hours destroyed a Valley Stream family's Buscher Avenue home.
The first blaze sparked around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, badly damaging the house. It rekindled around 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to residents, and completed the gutting. It also damaged neighboring homes, displacing at least one more family.
Deanna Navarro, who lived in the first-floor of the home with her husband and three children, says she lost everything from baby pictures to new Christmas gifts and handmade projects the kids had made.
"Pictures they drew for me since they were babies 'til now, my drawings, stuff, everything," Navarro says. "I'm just grateful that my kids weren't here."
She says she was told the original fire sparked from a hot plate in the basement.
Supporters have set up a GoFundMe page to help the family rebuild.
Neighbors Ali Baig and Ben Rodriguez were out for an early morning walk when they smelled smoke from the second fire. They alerted other neighbors and helped them escape the adjacent homes.
"We might be inside, burned," says Arandy Acheta, who was awakened by the two men. "Or we could be suffocated by the smoke."
