Fire officials say today's extreme heat may have caused two fires on the Island.

Fire crews responded to 11 Armour St. in Long Beach after receiving a call that two houses were on fire. Officials believe the fire started in the back of the home and spread to the house behind it on 12 Doyle St.

Intense heat could have also caused a utility pole to burst into flames just after noon in Merrick today. LIPA says the heat and excessive strain on the system may have sparked the fire. About two dozen customers were without power after the incident.
