The National Register of Historic Places has added a historic gay resort in Fire Island to its list.

The Community House and Theater opened in 1948 and is the oldest continuously operating gay and lesbian theater in the country.

Residents hope the distinction will help an ongoing effort to raise $700,000 to renovate the theater.
