A
century-old landmark of Long Island needs some repairs.
Part
of the Fire Island Lighthouse Tower is shut down because of damage that may
have been caused by the weather.
The
National Park Service says an
exterior panel on the northeast side of the lighthouse “separated from the
structure.”
It
called the damage “more cosmetic than it is structural” and said the closure
was out of an abundance of caution.
“Half
the terrace will be closed on the north side and boardwalks leading to the
north side of the lighthouse will be closed until further notice...the lighthouse
structure will remain temporarily closed until further notice."
Tours
of the lighthouse have been suspended,
but the Lens Building, museum and gift shop will remain open.
