Firefighters from 10 departments battled a fire at a Hewlett apartment building for more than two hours Tuesday evening.
Officials say the fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. at a garden apartment building on Broadway near East Rockaway Road. Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, they say it started in a second-floor bathroom. The fire chief says the fast-moving flames engulfed the roof before causing it to collapse. He reports 32 apartments in the complex were damaged, while 16 of them are no longer livable.
According to officials, no residents were injured, but five firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The Red Cross put up 11 displaced residents in local hotels.
