An argument between two pregnant women at a North Bay Shore homeless shelter turned deadly Friday night.According to police, 21-year-old Shantelle Scruggs fatally stabbed 26-year-old Barbara Santos during a fight. Both women have two children and resided at Project ReDirect, a shelter for homeless families. A manager at the home called 911 after the stabbing and police tried to aid Santos, who was eight months pregnant. She was transported to Southside Hospital, where attempts to save her unborn son were unsuccessful.
According to prosecutors, Scruggs, who is also eight months pregnant, made a written confession. Her lawyer said Santos is the one who brought the knife to the fatal confrontation. Santos' family says she told them that Scruggs apparently had a lot of problems with people in the house. Police confirm the two women had ongoing arguments with each other.
Scruggs is currently only charged with one count of manslaughter, however, prosecutors could add more charges at a later date.
