The fiancée of a Kings Park teacher who was killed in a wrong-way crash on the Sunken Meadow Parkway a year ago is still seeking justice.
Anthony Mariano was fatally struck by an alleged drunk driver on Nov. 20, 2020, but the trial has not yet started for the suspect.
"I can't believe it..." says Christie Azzolini, the victim's fiancé. "I feel like this is as black and white a case as possible. I cannot believe it takes this long to just hold someone responsible for their actions."
Azzolini and Mariano postponed their July 2020 wedding a year because of COVID-19, but their wedding day never came.
"Any first is extremely emotional," Azzolini says. "Any time I have to try to do anything for the first time without Anthony is extremely emotional."
Joseph Norris, an off-duty FDNY firefighter, was the driver of the other car. His attorney says there is a number of things affecting the case.
"It's not an easy case," says Anthony LaPinta. "Factually, emotionally...it's a combination of a lot of factors resulting in this case taking as long as it has."
Prosecutors say Norris had a blood alcohol content of .29 after leaving a strip club.
Norris was arraigned on a grand jury indictment in March. He lost both of his legs as a result of the crash and is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.
