The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had denied aid to thousands of Long Islanders whose homes were damaged by flooding in October.
While Suffolk officials estimate the flooding caused $47 million in damage to the county, Nassau reported millions more. Many residents say they are now forced to pay repair bills up to $20,000 and are not receiving any help from the government.
Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says FEMA officials believe state and local governments do not need federal help. He says he is planning on appealing the decision.
