Federal agents raided a popular Chinese restaurant in Syosset Tuesday and escorted out at least nine undocumented workers.
The Empire Szechuan on Jericho Turnpike has been temporarily shut down while officials continue their investigation. Police say none of the workers had identification on them. They say the investigation will be forwarded to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The raid was only part of the problem for the restaurant?s owner, Gilbert Chang. Special agents from the Internal Revenue Service descended on his Woodbury home and were seen carrying out boxes from the residence.
IRS Special Agent Joseph Foy would not say specifically what his agency was looking for. Foy would only say that his agency is responsible for criminal violations of the tax code, such as money laundering or tax invasion.
