FDNY launches effort to recruit more minorities, women
The FDNY has kicked off a new recruitment effort to hire more minorities and women.
To attract more diversity, the FDNY will be actively recruiting in minority communities, at parades, festivals, shopping centers and colleges. It will also launch a TV, radio, and newspaper campaign. According to the FDNY, more than 91 percent of its force is white, less than 3 percent is black, about 5 percent is Hispanic and less than 1 percent is female.
Captain Paul Washington, who leads a group that represents black firefighters, says the department is having trouble hiring minorities because the written exam is unfair. He is calling on the FDNY to change the exam. But the FDNY stands by the test and calls it fair.
