The father of a Long Island girl killed when she was flung from a horse is on a quest to bring about life-saving legislation.

Nicole Hornstein was riding with a trainer when she was tossed from her horse's back and onto the pavement. She was not wearing a helmet, and died after 20 days in a coma.

Spurred by his daughter's death, Gary Hornstein began a three-year journey to get a law passed to mandate helmet use on horse riders under 16. It was passed in Florida, where the accident occurred.

He then took his efforts to New York, where he successfully pushed for a law requiring helmet use for all riders 18 and under. Legislation had previously required helmets on riders 14 and under.

Hornstein is now trying to get the law passed in Kentucky.
