A family argument turned violent in Greenport Sunday, ending with a father allegedly stabbing his son in the torso.
Southold police released a statement saying Eddie Smith, 76, stabbed his 49-year-old son, Robert, with a kitchen knife. Police say the incident marks the second time in six months that cops were called to the home to investigate a stabbing.
The son was recuperating on the porch of the home he shares with his fiancée, but refused to speak about the case in detail to News 12 Long Island.
Neighbor Maggie Coffey finds it hard to believe that the father committed the crime. "I mean, that's an elderly man. Very nice, very polite, always social with everyone," she says. "I don't know if they've got the right person in jail."
However, Coffey and other neighbors do confirm that police have been called to the house several times. "They fight rather loudly. It's always going on over there. ? Maybe they need some counseling."
Smith was arraigned on assault charges and is being held in Riverhead on $25,000 bail.
