A group of Latinos who claimed they were tossed out of their Farmingdale homes because of their race settled a federal lawsuit Thursday. Residents of the Fairfield at Farmingdale apartment complex say they were living with rats, mold and gaping holes in the ceilings. Last May, those tenants filed a lawsuit claiming the village of Farmingdale asked Fairfield to redevelop the complex and, in turn, Fairfield threatened to evict them because they are Latino. On Thursday, the tenants reached a settlement with the complex's owner. The tenants now have two options. Under option one, they can move into another Fairfield apartment location with subsidized rent for a period of time and move back into the Farmingdale complex when it is fully renovated. Tenants also have the option to move out and receive a $16,500 lump sum payment from Fairfield. The attorney for Fairfield at Farmingdale says even though the suit was settled, the complex owner denies any wrongdoing. The tenants also have a lawsuit pending against the village of Farmingdale and the building's prior owner, Secatogue Realty.
