A Centereach family that escaped a house fire just two weeks ago sat down for Thanksgiving Thursday with the neighbor who rescued them.
"We all got out alive," says April Noon. "It's something you take for granted every day. You just don't realize."
April, her husband Jason, and their two you boys nearly perished on Nov. 11 when flames trapped them on the second floor of their home.
As News 12 previously reported, the Noon family was rescued from the second story by neighbor and off-duty Suffolk County police officer, James Anson.
"I didn't really think to be honest with you, people yelling from a window, I had a ladder available, and I grabbed it," Anson says.
Anson took the ladder from his garage and used it to rescue the family through a window. But he refuses to take all the credit. He says two other officers and firefighters all worked together to get the Noons and one of their dogs to safety.
"Everything is going to be OK," says Jason Noon. "Everything that got destroyed in this house can be replaced. My family cannot be replaced."
The Noons say they will eventually rebuild, and also that they remain thankful for each other and the love of their neighbors and the entire community.
