The family of a Mount Vernon teenager who was stabbed to death nearly three years ago is vowing to always keep her memory alive.

Some days are harder than the rest for Marlan Green and Lavern Gordon.

"Things haven't been easy. It's really tough stuff," says Kayla Green's mom, Lavern Gordon.

That's especially the case on March 13.

That's the day their daughter, Kayla Green was born.

She was a cheerleader in Mount Vernon.

"She was a good sister, a good friend. She was fun, she was energetic, she loved to dance a lot," says Taniya White who, was a longtime friend of Kayla Green.

Green's life was cut short in April 2022.

She was just 16 years old when she was stabbed by another cheerleader from a different team following a parade in Mount Vernon.

Green died on the way to the hospital, one of her friends was also badly hurt.

"When she was going to school that morning, I was the last person that she told good bye," says Green's cousin Jermaine Smith.

The attacker, who was 15 at the time, is serving a three to nine year prison sentence.

"The person who did this to her, the time that she got is so unfair to us," says Green's dad, Marlan Green.

While family and friends continue to reel from this tragedy, they're holding on tight to their memories with Kayla.

"I'm going to let her live on forever," says Green.
