Firefighters raced to a call of a house fire in West Islip Saturday, but small explosions kept them from rushing in to douse the flames.
Firefighters say upon arrival at the Oakneck Road home, they were confronted with heavy fire in the garage which was extending into the house. However, firefighters were forced to keep their distance after several small explosions came from the garage. Fire officials say they didn?t know if the explosions were caused by fireworks, aerosol cans or ammunition.
About 75 firefighters from four different neighboring communities responded to the fire. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. Most of the home was badly damaged by heat, water and smoke. Arson investigators were on the scene to determine what caused the explosions and the fire.
