An explosion at a Con Edison electrical plant in Astoria, Queens caused a bright blue light to appear over the New York City skyline Thursday night.
The NYPD says officers investigated a transformer explosion at the Astoria East and North Queens power plant. They advised people to avoid 20th Avenue and 31st Street.
The explosion caused a bright blue light that illuminated the New York skyline. The lights caused a stir on social media as several witnesses posted photographs and videos of the flash.
The lights could be seen from various parts of New Jersey, prompting dozens of calls to the News 12 New Jersey newsroom inquiring about the lights.
Con Edison is calling the incident an "electrical fault that caused a sustained electrical arch flash and transmission disturbance."
There are no reports of any injuries.
