(AP) - The former deputy presiding officerof New York's Suffolk County Legislature has pleaded not guilty tofelony charges. Prosecutors say he falsely claimed to live in hisLong Island district when he actually had moved to Palm BeachCounty, Fla.
Elie Mystal was arraigned Monday on twocounts of third-degree grand larceny and one count of offering afalse instrument for filing.
Prosecutors say he's accused of collecting a salary of about$80,000 a year as a legislator under false pretenses.
Mystal resigned in May as questions arose about his residency.
Attorney William Wexler says his client intends to defendhimself against the charges. If convicted, Mystal could face up tofive years in prison.
