The former chief executive of Islandia-based Computer Associates was sentenced to 12 years in prison for accounting fraud Thursday.
Sanjay Kumar, 44, told the court he knew that he was wrong and there was no excuse for his conduct before his sentencing. Kumar was charged with adding fake revenue to the end quarter balance sheet of CA by backdating sales contract. He pleaded guilty in April to obstruction of justice and securities fraud charges.
Kumar was also fined $8 million. He had faced up to 20 years behind bars. The defense had urged the judge to give Kumar a short prison term followed by lengthy community service. Kumar has to surrender on February 27.
