A hawk that found itself entangled in a tree in Huntington Station is recovering Sunday after being rescued by firefighters.
Maritza Mancia says she saw the red-tailed bird entangled in a rope on a branch high above her Huntington Station home Saturday. Mancia called police, who called the fire department. Firefighters rescued the hawk after LIPA moved a power line.
The group Volunteers for Wildlife is taking care of the bird, which has an injured eye. Experts believe the hawk was kept as a pet, which is illegal on Long Island, due to nail polish on its body and the string that was tied to its wing. They say the bird may have escaped and is probably too docile to be released into the wild.
