The Town of Hempstead honored the memory of a 12-year-old girl who was killed on her way to school by renaming a street in Elmont "Gabrielle Johnson Avenue."
The commemorative sign, dedicating Village Avenue to Gabrielle Johnson, was placed at the corner of Village Avenue and Ruby Street.
Johnson was crossing Elmont Road at Village Avenue when she was struck by a car on Feb. 1, 2016.
"Her death has left our family in shock and disbelief. The pain is unbelievable," said her aunt Christine Rose.
Town Supervisor Anthony Santino was on hand for the street dedication.
"We are here to celebrate her joyous life and the positive influence that she had with all those whom she interacted," said Santino.
He then presented the family with a replica of the street sign.
This isn't the first time the family has been struck by tragedy. They also lost her 8-year-old brother in a car accident before Gabrielle was born.
The family has set up a scholarship award in honor of both of their children.
