Weeks after doctors told him he might not survive, an East Patchogue teenager is home from the hospital.

Tommy Spiotta, 19, had been hospitalized since early July after a massive life-threatening blood clot was discovered in him.

Doctors at Stony Brook University Hospital say it was a close call because the blood clot was damaging his intestines, and it was quickly becoming a matter of life and death.

Spiotta's parents, Gene and Jane, say they're grateful to the medical staff for saving his life. Spiotta volunteers with his dad at the North Patchogue Fire Department.

Gene, who is an assistant chief at the department, says he was overwhelmed by the support from his colleagues, family and friends.

Spiotta says he's excited to start his senior year of high school this fall and that he cannot wait to be back in the firehouse. He plans to enjoy what's left of this summer with his family.
